Tape failure and old seams

Why paint alone does not fix cracks

Loose material is removed, the seam is taped or reinforced, compound is built in thin coats, edges are feathered wide, sanding is controlled, and primer is used before finish paint. The repair should be checked under light because ceilings reveal small ridges quickly.

When a larger ceiling skim coat is better

If a ceiling has several cracks, old patch lines, texture damage, or strong lighting, one narrow repair may not blend well. A larger skim coat or full ceiling refinishing can create a smoother, more consistent surface.
